Abstract

Phlebitis is one of the effects of nasocomial infection. The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with the phlebitis incidence on pediatric patients aged 1-14 years in the Edelweiss room, RSMK Depok. The research method used was descriptive correlation with cross sectional observational methods that identify and analyze the factors associated with the phlebitis incidence on pediatric patients aged 1-14 years in the Edelweiss room, RSMK Depok. The analysis was univariate and bivariate with Chisquare test. Number of samples were 86 pediatric patients aged 1-14 years and 86 nurses who performed infusion to patients treated in Edelweis room. The results of univariate obtained, an it was found that the phlebitis incidence by 17 (19.8%), insertion frequency of 1x by 68 (79.1%), the infusion location in metacarpal vena by 65 (75.6%), the lenght of intravenous installation by 2 days (27.9%), type of hypotonic fluids intravenous by 71 (82.6%), the number of 2-3 therapies given by 29 (33.7%), catheter no.24 by 69 (80.2%), treatment of insertion done by 57 (66.3%), less knowledge of nurses by 33 (38.4%), toddler age by 43 (50%) and the type of active child activities by 52 (60.5%). Results of bivariate showed there was significant association between the knowledge of nurses with the phlebitis incidence (p= 0.000), the insertion frequency with the phlebitis incidence (p=0.001), the number of intravenous therapy with the phlebitis incidence (p=0.001), type of intravenous fluids with the phlebitis incidence (p= 0.015), insertion treatment with the phlebitis incidence (p= 0.031), the lenght of intravenous installation with the phlebitis incidence (p=0.039) and patients activities with the phlebitis incidence (p=0.004). It is recommended for nurses to improve their skills, knowledge and information about the causes and prevention of phlebitis so that the incidence of phlebitis can be reduced.
