Abstract

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if staff registered nurses’ perceptions of their nurse manager’s leadership style (transformational, transactional) predicted staff registered nurses’ structural empowerment (SE). The theoretical foundations included the full range leadership model that features two of the three leadership styles, transformational and transactional, as well as structural empowerment theory. The researcher used the online platform Mind Garden® to conduct the study. The participants were recruited by the research officer from a Magnet® and nonMagnet- designated hospital, as well as a physician’s office. The participants completed an online survey that included the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ5X) and the Conditions for Work Effectiveness Questionnaire (CWEQ-ll). The first research questions’ result of the simple linear regression analysis indicated that transformational leadership style significantly predicted staff nurses’ SE, F (1,64) = 48.04, p < .001, R 2 = .43. Approximately 43% of the variance in Total Structural Empowerment is explainable by transformational leadership. The second research questions’ result of the simple linear regression analysis indicated transactional leadership style was also significant but accounted for less variation in SE than transformational leadership. The results of the linear regression model were significant, F (1,64) = 18.92, p < .001, R 2 = .23, indicating that approximately 23% of the variance in SE is explainable by transactional leadership.
